Spaces Between Series
The
Spaces Between Series uses color, texture, patterns and abstract
cloud like formations, as well as symbolic forms to create a design
which emphasizes the uneasy balance between positive and negative
space.
Painted
with oil on linen they were created using glazing techniques as well
as texture and loose drips. They are abstract images that border on
being recognizable much like a cloud will take on a shape only to
morph a moment later. Some of the paintings have distinctive images
which I used as symbols alluding to a deeper meaning but which stop
short of becoming literally significant. Circular forms and lines
painted freehand also are intended as an allusion to greater meaning
and symbolism again stopping short. The paintings are balanced on the
border of awkward using warm and cool colors which push from the back
and pull from the front. Negative space is as important as positive
space and is treated like its own abstract form, it is also
emphasized with pattern, texture and glazing.
The
overall combination of these elements makes for a sumptuous and bold
image meant to leap out at the viewer and pull them into the
painting’s unique world of barely maintained balance. The almost
symbolic nature of the paintings combined with the bold colors is
meant to connect to the viewers psyche by brushing the subconscious
mind with images that could explain the nature of the universe if
only we could just grasp the meaning. Inspired by fairy tales and
folk images from when I was younger, this idea permeates much of my
art. The painting’s familiar but abstracted images are a deeper
allusion to symbols being inherent in our subconscious but not in
fact containing meaning beyond what we give them.

Trees for the Forest
How much more beautiful something seems when there is an edge of danger to it. The forest has long been theme to romantic stories and ideas, as well as a place to be feared. What lurks in the shadow beneath the tree line? Is it the big bad wolf as in the story of Little Red Riding Hood? Or is it merely a trick of the light? The forest can be dangerous as well as alluring. It can make you want to wander too far and trap you. But, how can we not dare to look when the vista can be so breath taking?
A Tree Series
In a world of 6 billion people it’s hard not to notice how alike we all are. However, each of us is different in subtle yet significant ways. We are a forest of people each of us growing, living and co-existing together to form a mass that covers the globe.
A tree series is taking this idea of same but different and exploring it in a fun and colorful way. Each piece is an examination of form, relating to color and technique.
